As a Managing Director in Citi's Investment Banking division, Brooke Schooley advised Fortune 100 industrial clients on financing, mergers and acquisitions, chaired the Analyst Compensation and Promotion Committee, and served on the Investment Banking Compensation Committee. After leaving Citi in 2008, Brooke founded and chairs the 7th Avenue South Alliance, a Greenwich Village non-profit working toward a cleaner, greener and safer neighborhood. She now chairs the NYC West Village Business Improvement District Steering Committee.

Brooke has a Master’s Degree in Agricultural Economics and sings professionally, most recently with Delaware Valley Opera. In addition to Compassion in World Farming USA, she serves on the boards of Cantata Profana, Friends of the Coleman Station Historic District and Oblong Rural Cemetery.

Born and raised in New York City, Lyn Devon is a life-long animal lover. Lyn became engaged in the animal rights movement while attending Brown University and joined various animal rights organizations, holding fundraising events and roundtable discussions to engage people in the movement.

Lyn has partnered with Mercy For Animals and Farm Sanctuary, among others, and has served on the board of Farm Sanctuary since 2015. In 2014 she joined the board of Compassion in World Farming USA.

After working in the fashion industry for fifteen years, running her own award-winning eponymous (and of course fur free!) designer womenswear company, Lyn Devon, she closed her company and founded New York Stoneware with her husband in 2013. While raising their children, Lola, 7, and Jack, 5, and their dog Quincy, 1, Lyn and William run their Bronx-based production pottery company.

Our Global CEO, Philip Lymbery, is an internationally respected, award-winning campaigner and thought leader. For 25 years he has worked extensively on animal welfare issues, wildlife and the environment, leading animal welfare reforms that have improved the lives of billions of animals. These reforms include Europe-wide bans on veal crates for calves and on barren battery cages for laying hens. Philip is a highly respected speaker, lecturer, and award-winning author of game-changing books Farmageddon: The True Cost of Cheap Meat and Deadzone: Where the Wild Things Were. He regularly commentates on the global effects of industrial farming and presses for a more balanced, regenerative food system. Philip is also Visiting Professor at the University of Winchester, President of Eurogroup for Animals, founding board member of the World Federation for Animals and was a UN 2021 Food Systems Summit Champion. His awards while CEO at Compassion include: The Observer Ethical Award for Campaigner of the Year; and the ‘International Golden Dove’ peace prize in Rome.

Kathryn’s role involves ensuring the smooth operation of Compassion’s work around the world. She oversees our global operational services including human resources, legal and governance, IT and our diversity, equity and inclusion program. Her career spans more than 20 years in human resources. Kathryn joined us in 2015, after several years in consultancy for corporates and NGOs and 10 years at The Body Shop International where she was Head of HR and Compensation and Benefits. Kathryn is a graduate of Loughborough University and holds an MSc in International Human Resources from the University of Portsmouth.

Aoife oversees all operational and strategic aspects of Compassion in World Farming International’s finance. Before joining us in May 2018 she had spent nine years in finance and business leadership including Director of Financial Operations roles at Publicis (advertising and PR). Aoife is a Fellow Chartered Accountant and worked with PwC in Dublin, London and Boston in both the Audit and Advisory divisions. She is a graduate of Dublin City University and holds a degree in Accounting and Finance.

Valerie has been Chair of the Board since 2002 and has helped with our success, including achieving charitable entity status in July 2006.

Raised on a farm in Somerset that reared pigs and made cider, she then graduated in Mathematics and gained a Masters' Degree in Operational Research. Valerie's career has included working for the Government, Readers’ Digest and WWF. Subsequent to this, she set up a consultancy that developed fundraising strategies for over 25 voluntary organisations. Valerie has since built up a residential property portfolio which she now manages.

Sir David Madden is a retired member of Her Majesty’s Diplomatic Service and was British High Commissioner to Cyprus between 1994 - 1999, and then Ambassador to Greece from 1999 - 2004. He has had many other postings including Berlin, Moscow and Belgrade.

In addition to being a Trustee of Compassion, David is also a patron of the Voice for Ethical Research at Oxford.

As a Chartered Certified Accountant for over 10 years, mainly in the charitable sector, Sarah has a multitude of experience working for the financial division of many charities including Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust, a Children’s Aid charity focused on providing essentials to war torn areas of the world and for an Educational Trust. She now sits as the Treasurer for our Board of Trustees.

She was first awoken to Compassion’s campaign work and vision when she attended a talk as a student in Oxford and has been an active supporter ever since.

Teddy spent his working life as a commercial property lawyer at the international law firm, Clifford Chance. He has also been a Trustee of the RSPCA Central London Branch, the Peabody Trust, and the Hampstead Garden Suburb Trust. He is Electoral Officer for British Fencing, and until late 2012 was also Chair of the Disciplinary and Grievance Panels for that organisation.

When he retired, Teddy wanted to undertake voluntary work for animal welfare, a cause that he had been passionate about since his teens. He had long admired Compassion for our highly rational approach, based on thorough research and carefully targeted lobbying and campaigning. He therefore decided to offer us his services, and later joined the Board.

Every year over sixty billion farm animals are reared for our food, the majority in factory farms. Compassion’s work is crucial to ending this global scandal of suffering and achieving a more harmonious future.

Joyce is our Ambassador Emeritus and was Chief Executive of Compassion from 1991 - 2005. She now works for us on a consultancy basis.

Joyce played a key role in achieving the UK ban on sow stalls in the nineties and in getting recognition of animal sentience enshrined in the European Union Treaty.

Joyce speaks and publishes widely on the welfare of farm animals. She has given evidence to the UK and New Zealand governments on genetic engineering of animals, and to the UK Government Enquiry into the handling of BSE (‘mad cow disease’). In 2007, she was invited to present to the European Commission’s Group of Ethical Advisers on the welfare aspects of cloning farm animals for food. In 2010 she was asked to participate in an invitee-only workshop on sustainable farming and food with the UK Government’s advisory Committee on Climate Change.

In 2017 the second edition of the expert book she co-edited with Professor John Webster was published: “The Meat Crisis: Developing more sustainable and ethical production and consumption”.

Joyce helped organise Compassion’s major international conference in 2017: “Extinction and Livestock: moving to a flourishing food system for wildlife, farm animals and us” and has co-edited the book based on the conference proceedings.

She is a Patron of the Animal Interfaith Alliance and a Trustee of Help in Suffering, a veterinary centre in Jaipur. She is on the Advisory Council of CreatureKind.

In 2004 Joyce was the joint recipient of the RSPCA Lord Erskine Award in recognition of a “very important contribution in the field of animal welfare”.

In 2015 Joyce was conferred with an honorary Doctorate (D.Litt) by the University of Winchester, in recognition of her work for the welfare of animals. In 2017 she was made a Doctor of the University of Keele (Hon causa).

Joyce grew up on a mixed farm in Ireland and worked and lived in India after graduation. Reading Gandhi’s autobiography started her journey towards working for Compassion. She practices and teaches Tai Chi, enjoys walking and sings in a community choir.

Jeremy’s involvement with Compassion began at the time of our founding in 1967. In 1970 he helped launch one of our first public exhibitions, in London’s Regent Street.

Jeremy became a trustee in the 1980s and worked closely with our founder Peter Roberts and now with our CEO Philip Lymbery, in his previous role as Vice Chair of the Board. He believes this is the most exciting time in Compassion’s history, as we become truly global in our reach.

Jeremy has been a leading figure within the charity, The White Eagle Lodge, whose work includes the promotion of respect and compassion towards all animals and sentient life.

Mahi is the President and CEO of the Albert Schweitzer Stiftung für unsere Mitwelt, an animal welfare charity based in Germany. He has been an animal advocate since he launched the ‘Cage-Free Campus’ campaign as a student.

Mahi has been working with Compassion since 2008 and joined our Board of Trustees in 2013. His main inspirations are the achievements of Mahatma Gandhi and the late Henry Spira.

Factory farming is one of the great injustices in the world. It is great to see more and more people standing up to the atrocities of this system and I'm sure that my generation will be able to witness the demise of factory farming, if we work hard and smart enough.

Josphat Ngonyo joined our Board of Trustees in September 2020. He is the Founder and Executive Director of Africa Network for Animal Welfare (ANAW) and also co-founded Africa Network for Animal Welfare – USA. In this role, Josphat is leading ANAW’s strategy focused on ensuring that animals are treated as sentient beings both at the grassroots and policy level.

Josphat has worked extensively in wildlife conservation and animal welfare for over 20 years. Through his leadership at ANAW, he catalyzed the establishment of the National Judicial Dialogues that brings together sixteen law-enforcement agencies in Kenya.

Josphat earned his MBA from Africa Leadership University School of Business following a B.ED (Arts) degree from Moi University, and a Diploma in Management of Not-for-Profit Organizations. He then led conservation initiatives at The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and later went on to lead Youth for Conservation as its Director.

As well as being a Trustee for Compassion, Josphat serves on the Board of ANAW - USA and is also an Honorary Warden, appointed by Kenya Wildlife Service due to his achievements in wildlife conservation in Kenya.

Professor Joy Carter is former Vice-Chancellor of The University of Winchester. She is an academic with research based in Geochemistry and Health and was a former President of the international society in her field. She is also a Co-Chair of the Climate Commission for UK Higher and Further Education, Chair of St Ethelburgas Centre for Reconciliation and Peace and Chair of the National Governing Body (NGB) of Squash.

Professor Carter was formally the Chair of GuildHE, and for many years served on the Universities UK Board. She has also chaired the Cathedrals Group of Universities and the Church of England’s Advisory Group for the Foundation for Educational Leadership. As an ambassador for higher level skills and vocational learning, Professor Carter chaired the University Vocational Awards Council (UVAC). She was previously the Vice-Chair of the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) and a former board member of the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA).

Professor Carter is Patron of 6 charities and is a Deputy Lieutenant for the county of Hampshire. Passionate about all aspects of sustainability and social justice, she has particular interests in climate change, widening participation, sport and animal welfare. She is an ambassador for Religions for Peace International and a member on the Standing Committee on Nurturing a Sustainable Environment.

Professor Carter was awarded a CBE in the New Year Honours in 2018 for services to Higher Education.
